A California Highway Patrol (CHP) recently suffered moderate injuries after having been hit by debris he was attempting to clear from the roadway on the Lemon Grove Freeway
The San Diego Union-Tribune reports that the accident happened at approximately 10:30 p.m. when the CHP officer stopped traffic in the eastbound lanes of Route 94 near the College Avenue exit ramp.
East County CHP spokesman Officer Travis Garrow told reporters in a statement that the CHP officer, whose identity has not been released, suffered moderate injuries in the accident.
Garrow said the officer was getting out of his vehicle when a Nissan Altima continued through the traffic break and toward the CHP officer. The officer attempted to jump out of the way of the oncoming car, but the driver of the Altima hit him and sideswiped the CHP patrol cruiser, tearing off its door. The driver of the Altima continued driving and fled the scene.
The injured CHP officer was able to send out a radio dispatch informing other law enforcement officers in the area that he was hurt and a description of the hit and run vehicle.
A second CHP spotted the Altima two exits away from where the initial crash occurred. The vehicle had significant front end damage. The driver was placed under arrest on suspicion of hit-and-run and alcohol impairment.
