On our nation’s busy Interstate highways and freeways, a chain reaction crash can happen at any time. In many metropolitan areas, even a minor fender bender can lead to a multi-car crash in the blink of an eye.
Moose 92 FM reported on its website that two such crashes happened earlier this month in Eastern Maine that involved as many as 60 vehicles, and in which 14 people were injured. Even with so many vehicles involved in the accident, thankfully, no one was killed.
Authorities in Maine say that on Tuesday, January 7th, in the northbound lanes of Interstate 95, the blinding light of the sun was the cause for the crash that happened at approximately 7:30 a.m.

In a statement given by Maine State Police Sergeant Bernard Brunette, the initial chain-reaction crash was believed to involve seven vehicles. Even as Sgt. Brunette was investigating the crash, other cars continued to crash into each other. An additional ten vehicles crashed near the Highway 174 exit. The secondary crash also involved several big rigs that reportedly crashed into other vehicles going at regular highway speeds.
One person was taken by LifeFlight of Maine to be treated at Eastern Maine Medical Center and was listed in critical condition at the time of the report. Thirteen others were also taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Emergency crews were able to clear and reopen the highway approximately four hours later.
