Step One After a Car Accident: Get in a Safe Place
After a car accident, you should not leave your vehicle in the middle of the road. You could be struck again by another vehicle in this situation. If possible, move your vehicle to the side of the road, where you will be safer.
However, you should not leave the scene of the accident. In fact, driving away after an accident can leave you facing criminal charges.

Step Two After a Car Accident: Notify the Police
Many car accidents in Los Angeles must be reported to the police. You will need to inform a law enforcement officer that you were in a wreck if the car accident:
- Caused someone an injury
- Resulted in a death
- Caused significant property damage
A law enforcement officer in Los Angeles will need to file an accident report related to your collision. This official report may be needed if you seek compensation for the losses you sustained in the wreck. Make sure that you officially report your collision.
Step Three After a Car Accident: Gather Information at the Scene
Before you leave the scene of your accident, it’s important that you gather certain pieces of information. We understand that you may not be able to record the scene of your accident if you were severely injured. However, if possible, the experts recommend that you:
- Exchange information with all other drivers involved in the collision
- Get contact information from any witnesses to the collision
- Take pictures of the scene of the accident, your injuries, and damage to your vehicle
Car accident scenes are often cleared away quickly. Getting photographic proof of the scene of the accident can be valuable when it comes time to get compensation for your losses. Record as much information about the wreck as you can before you leave the scene.

Step Four After a Car Accident: Get Medical Assistance
If you are hurt in a car accident in Los Angeles, it’s important that you get medical attention quickly. You should not wait to visit a hospital or an emergency department (ED) if your injuries are very severe. Getting help quickly can ensure that your injuries are properly handled.
Additionally, it is easier to prove that your injuries were caused by the accident if you seek immediate medical care. Waiting to visit a doctor can allow insurance agents to claim that you were not badly injured in an accident. In some cases, they may claim that you were not hurt at all.
