Lake Havasu is a popular vacation destination for people in California. But it can also be a dangerous one. Winds on the lake can push boats away from swimmers and cause them to drown before they can get back to safety.
That’s what seems to have happened in an accident that killed a teen last Sunday. His body was recovered yesterday. KTLA reported on the tragedy.
A group of people, including the teen, were on a rented pontoon boat in the lake’s south basin. They stopped the boat to go swim, but the winds blew the boat away from the teen’s location and he started to drown.
The group tried to steer the boat back, but could not. One man tried to jump off and got hit by the propeller. He was rescued. Two others tried to go after the young man, but nearly drowned themselves.
First responders were able to take the three would-be rescuers to the hospital for treatment, but the teen could not be rescued. Divers had to use sonar to locate the body.
We wish to extend our condolences to the family of the young man, and wish to encourage everyone to wear life vests when they go swimming in open bodies of water. It may be awkward, but it will keep you safe.
Also, learn the proper procedures for telling other boats that there are swimmers in the water, as well as how to anchor a boat so it doesn’t drift too far.
