Almost as long as there have been automobiles on the road, street racing has been glamorized in both literature and film. Most states in the country have laws prohibiting street racing, and yet every year, motorists, passengers and innocent bystanders lose their lives in dangerous games.
KTLA in Los Angeles reports on a multi-vehicle wreck in Sun Valley on Friday, April 12th left two people dead and three others seriously injured. Authorities believe that the root cause in the fatal crash was illegal street racing.
Investigators say the accident took place at approximately 7:10 p.m. in the 9000 blocks of San Fernando Road when a white Dodge Charger was believed to have been racing a dark-colored Dodge Charger eastbound on San Fernando Road. The white Dodge Charger T-boned a Toyota Corolla that was turning left onto Lankershim Boulevard. Detective Meghan Aguilar of the Los Angeles Police Department said in a statement that the Toyota was not involved in the street race.
The force of the impact was significant enough that emergency crews were uncertain what model the vehicle was at first. A 25-year-old man and a 21-year-old woman were inside the Toyota and both pronounced dead at the scene.
The male driver in the dark-colored Dodge Charger left the scene of the accident. The female driver of the white Charger fled the scene on foot, leaving three others who were injured inside of her abandoned vehicle.
