A wrong-way crash is usually the result of a driver being either impaired or confused. Such an accident that happened last month along Interstate 80 near Sacramento that left nine people injured, including four children, may have involved a driver that was impaired at the time.
The Sacramento Bee reported on its website that on Saturday, December 21st, an accident happened at around midnight when a white Toyota Corolla was traveling westbound in the eastbound lanes of Interstate 80. The accident happened in Solano County near the Abernathy Road exit when the Toyota collided with two other vehicles.
A spokesperson for the California Highway Patrol told reporters that all people involved in the three-vehicle crash except for one driver suffered critical injuries. Emergency crews had to extricate several people from their wrecked cars.
Among the injured were four children as young as 6-years old, two men, aged 35 and 40, and a 17-year-old girl who suffered critical and potentially life-threatening injuries. They were taken to all taken to a local hospital for treatment of injuries they sustained in the crash.
Officers from the CHP arrested the driver of the Toyota at the scene of the accident on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol. Authorities have not released the wrong-way driver’s identity.
