Accidents as the result of police chases are far more common than you might think. Severe and even fatal accidents are caused by police chases all because someone was in the wrong place at the wrong time. When police are in pursuit, there is often little thought of other innocent drivers or pedestrians.

CBS affiliate KPIX reports that seems to be what happened in Redwood City on the morning of Wednesday, September 18th when police got a 911 call about a possible home invasion. The incident left a pedestrian critically injured after they were hit by a police cruiser.
911 Dispatch in Redwood City received the call of a home invasion and possible robbery in progress involving four masked men at approximately 9:47 a.m. at a residence in the 300 block of Poplar Avenue.
In a statement, the Redwood City Police Department indicated that a 12-year veteran of the police in a K-9 patrol unit responded to the call and was heading southbound on El Camino when the officer struck the pedestrian with their police cruiser.
Video surveillance footage captured the incident indicating that a male pedestrian had jaywalked across El Camino and was standing on the median when the police officer lost control of his patrol vehicle on the wet pavement, going into the median and striking the man.
The police vehicle went over the median and into the oncoming traffic of the northbound lanes. Two additional vehicles were also involved in the crash.
The pedestrian was rushed to an area hospital for treatment of serious injuries. After undergoing surgery, the pedestrian is reported to be in serious but stable condition.
The drivers in the vehicles also involved in the crash were treated for minor injuries and released at the scene.
Authorities say that the Redwood City Offices for the California Highway Patrol and its Major Accident Investigation Team is continuing to investigate the crash.
