Tesla crashes involving their autopilot system have been happening more often lately, and they bring a lot of attention. Their autopilot system is intended to assist drivers with braking, acceleration, and steering, like a fancy cruise control. But some people are trusting the system completely and causing accidents.
The Associated Press reported that an investigation into a Tesla Crash in Fontana earlier this month had the autopilot system engaged. This is the 29th Tesla crash that the NHTSA has responded to.
In that crash, a man was killed when his Tesla Model 3 hit an overturned semi on a freeway late at night. His car also hit a bystander that was trying to help the semi-truck driver out of his truck. He sustained serious injury.
The California Highway Patrol revealed that the autopilot system was engaged at the time of the crash. This is at least the fourth crash death related to this system.

“While the CHP does not normally comment on on-going investigations, the Department recognizes the high-level of interest centered around crashes involving Tesla vehicles,” the agency said in a statement. “We felt this information provides an opportunity to remind the public that driving is a complex task that requires a driver’s full attention.”
In addition to the autopilot system, some Tesla drivers are in a beta program for a full self-driving program. So far we are not aware of any crashes related to that system.
