Car fires are scary, but they’re no excuse to run from a crash scene, especially when two fatalities are involved. The LA Times has reported that police are searching for a speeding driver who ran from this situation yesterday morning.
The crash happened on North 11th Street West and West Rancho Vista Boulevard soon after midnight. At least two vehicles were involved, a Dodge Challenger and a Toyota Corolla.
The Challenger is alleged to have been speeding and rear-ended the Corolla. The crash caused a light pole to fall over. Surveillance video caught the moment of impact and the fireball when the Corolla exploded.
Two people in the Corolla were killed in the fire. The Challenger was later found abandoned, but a witness saw the driver jump into an Infiniti and drive off. Investigators believe that, due to the violence of the crash, the Challenger was street racing.
“We have had an increase in street racing issues in the area,” LASD Det. Liz Sherman said. “We do have deputies that are out nightly that are trying to make an impact on the car clubs.”
Our condolences go out to the family of the burned victims, and we hope that the police are able to catch the responsible driver. Fleeing the scene of an accident immediately puts the liability on you. Don’t do it.
