Two San Diego County teens were arrested on Tuesday, January 7th, after a series of carjackings and robberies in El Cajon and the surrounding area.
The San Diego Union-Tribune reports that police believe that the two may also be connected to a series of robberies of 7-Eleven stores in the city of San Diego, El Cajon, Spring Valley, and National City.
The two began their crime spree with a carjacking at approximately 1:00 a.m. in an apartment complex parking lot located in the neighborhood near the Parkway Boulevard Bowling Alley in El Cajon. The two teens stole a Toyota Corolla and headed to a 7-Eleven store located at the intersection of San Carlos Drive and Bisby Lake Avenue – just three miles away from the site of the initial carjacking.
According to a statement given by the San Diego Police Department’s Officer John Buttle, the teens went into the convenience store, the boy wielding a handgun and demanded money from the clerk. The clerk in the store had been preparing his drawer for the day when the teens came in. At one point, the robber reached over the counter and grabbed money from the till and fled in the stolen Toyota.

Lt. Steve Bodine, with the San Diego Sheriff’s Department, told reporters that at approximately 1:30 a.m., the pair walked into the 7-Eleven store located at the intersection of Paradise Valley and Worthington Street in Spring Valley. The teens waited for customers to leave the store before again pulling a gun on the clerk and demanded that the clerk give them the cash in the drawer.
Just before 2:00 a.m., the boy and girl then allegedly headed to the 7-Eleven convenience store located at North Euclid and Division Street in National City. National City Police Sgt. Tom Wilkins said in a statement that they were unsuccessful in their attempt to rob that store.
Seeing a pattern and believing that all of the recent C-store robberies were related, National City Police headed to the 7-Eleven located near the intersection of Eighth Street and Highland Avenue. It was there that police spotted the two suspects in a silver Toyota Corolla that had been described at all three of the prior robberies.
The teens attempted to flee from police but were apprehended a few blocks away after heading down a dead-end street and crashing into a fence and a retaining wall.
Initial reports indicate that the boy and girl and a possible third teen in the car were placed under arrest.
No further information has been released.
