If you are hurt in a car accident in Los Angeles, you could be entitled to compensation for your pain and suffering. This compensation will be referred to as “non-economic” damages in the court system. Unlike compensation for medical bills and lost wages, there isn’t a clear-cut record of how much compensation you need to cover your pain and suffering.
So, how much compensation do you get for pain and suffering from a car accident in Los Angeles, CA? Find out how non-economic damages are calculated with this article and the Simmrin Law Group. Pain and Suffering Compensation Varies by the Claim in Los Angeles
The state of California does not offer a set amount of compensation for drivers who are dealing with pain and suffering after a collision. Instead, the amount of compensation for pain and suffering varies for each car accident claim.
There are two primary methods used to determine how much compensation you should get for non-economic damages. These methods include:
- The per diem method
- The multiplier method
We’ll review both the per diem method and the multiplier method in this article. You can speak to a car accident lawyer in Los Angeles if you are not sure which method is being used to calculate your non-economic damages.

The Per Diem Method to Calculate Non-Economic Compensation
The per diem method for calculating non-economic compensation focuses on how much compensation you should get for each day of your recovery. Generally, a dollar amount will be calculated to express how much compensation you deserve per day. This amount is then multiplied by the number of days you are hurt.
For example, let’s say it takes you 50 days to recover from a car accident. Your per diem amount of compensation is $100. Therefore, you would be awarded $5,000 for your pain and suffering in Los Angeles.
The Multiplier Method to Calculate Non-Economic Compensation
The multiplier method may also be used to determine how much you get for pain and suffering from a car accident in Los Angeles. The multiplier method requires information about your economic damages. Economic damages are tied to losses you can measure, such as your:
- Medical expenses
- Wages lost at work
- Vehicle damages
All your economic damages are totaled in the multiplier method. A “multiplier” is then selected. The multiplier is often a number between one and four. The multiplier and your economic damages are multiplied in order to determine how much compensation you should get for your pain and suffering.
We can review an example to focus on the multiplier method. Let’s say you are dealing with $20,000 in economic damages after a collision. For your case, you get a multiplier of 2. You would receive $40,000 for your non-economic damages. Get help focusing on the specifics of your case by contacting Simmrin Law Group.
