Although there is likely to be less traffic on our streets and freeways over the Memorial Day weekend because of the current COVID-19 pandemic, NBC in Los Angeles reports that the CHP and Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Office will be intensifying patrols. Their primary focus will be on keeping DUI and other unsafe drivers off the road over the holiday.
According to the statement issued by CHP Commissioner, Warren Stanley, the increased patrols were put into effect as of 6:00 p.m. on Friday, May 22nd, and will last until 11:59 p.m. on Monday, May 25th. During that time, all available officers will be monitoring the streets and freeways.
“We will continue to enforce the traffic laws, help motorists who are in trouble, and educate people about the dangers of distracted and impaired driving,” Stanley said.

Although traffic citations and accidents have dropped significantly since Governor Newsom issued stay at home orders, there has been a significant rise in the number of citations issued by the CHP for motorists going at speeds in excess of 100 miles per hour. This, according to CHP Commissioner Stanley, is why the law enforcement agency will be on high alert.
“The rules still apply, no matter how little traffic there may be, obey the speed limit, fasten your seat belt, drive sober, and put down your phone,” Commissioner Stanley advised.
During the Memorial Day holiday weekend in 2019, there were 34 fatal accidents across the state of California and 1099 traffic citations issued.
