Oakland Police Department officers were locked in a two-hour standoff with two suspects after a single-vehicle crash earlier this week.
CBS Local station KPIX in San Francisco reports that the incident happened in the 4000 block of Edwards Avenue near Highway 580 on Thursday, April 16th. According to a statement given by Officer Johanna Watson, Oakland Police spokesperson, the suspects crashed their vehicle into a light pole along Edwards Avenue a little after 7:00 a.m.
According to the statement, officers arrived on the scene of the accident and were later joined by troopers from the California Highway Patrol (CHP). It was a CHP officer who observed a firearm inside the vehicle, so emergency responders backed off from the scene of the crash. The occupants of the car did not have their injuries cared for.

According to a Tweet sent out from the Oakland Police Department’s Twitter feed during the standoff, law enforcement officers observed movement inside the vehicle. Still, the occupants were not responding to the officers’ commands. It is unclear as to whether or not the occupants were simply too injured to respond or were blatantly resisting.
At approximately 9:49 a.m., nearly two-and-a-half hours later, the two occupants got out of their crashed vehicle. Reports indicate that both suspects refused medical treatment at the scene. They were then arrested by police officers and taken into custody. The identities of the suspects were not released at the time of the report.
Police have not stated what may have led to the crash.
