A man is accused of DUI after driving an electric scooter in Los Angeles. He crashed into an elderly man and killed him last Saturday. Amomama reports.
The 29-year-old was riding the scooter with a passenger on Lincoln Boulevard. When he hit the man, the 91-year-old fell and struck his head on the concrete. The elderly man died at the scene. The rider and his passenger were also ejected off of the vehicle.
Besides the DUI, the rider faces other charges. California does not allow electric scooters on sidewalks. They can only be driven on bike paths, trails, or bikeways with a speed no greater than 15 mph. It is unknown if either rider was wearing a helmet or why the police believe the driver was intoxicated.
Motorized scooters are popular for getting around major cities ever since rental companies like Lime offered them up to the public. However, most people are not trained in scooter safety. There have been several fatalities and injury crashes in the U.S. and around the world from these devices.
We wish to extend our condolences to the family of the victim and hope they can receive compensation from some source, whether it’s the riders or the scooter rental company.
