A driver from Hudson has been charged with second-degree murder after allegedly crashing and killing an animal control officer while drunk. WKHM reported on the matter.
The accident happened last June in Monroe at the intersection of Rainsville Road and M-50. According to the arrest report, the driver ran a red light and crashed into an animal control vehicle for the county. A young officer in that vehicle was injured in the wreck and died two days later in the hospital.
The arrested woman was also injured in the crash and went to the hospital for treatment. In addition to driving while drunk, she is also believed to be speeding at the time of the crash.
California has a special law about this sort of situation. If you are convicted of DUI and then get into another DUI wreck and kill someone, your charges will become second-degree murder. This is a much more serious charge than something like intoxication manslaughter.
